- What is the present status of the law requiring "moblie" (for a
- station that is designed to move around, whether or not it is) and
- "portable" (for a fixed station that is not at the station location)
- ?.. and the law requiring your present location number if your
- station is in a different area? Am I correct in that all of this has
- gone away now that station licenses do not exist?
-
- Jose
-
- PS... don't ask how a station can be "not at the station location"...
- you know what I mean! :)

- I believe the rules state the ID should be at least every 10 minutes and
- at the end of the last transmission. The only time I do use the short
- transmission ID stated above is when traffic is heavy enough on a net that

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Good morning. It's Sunday the 29th of May and here is the GB2RS news
- broadcast, prepared by the Radio Society of Great Britain.
-
- All listeners to this broadcast, whether RSGB members or not, are
- invited to the RSGB Headquarters Open Day to be held next Saturday the
- 4th of June. This is the perfect opportunity to call in and meet the
- staff, and have a tour round the building. There will be various trade
- and local club stands, and refreshments can be purchased. Admission from
- 10.30am until 4.30pm. A map of how to reach headquarters appears in June
- edition of Radio Communication and talk-in will be on 2 metres channel
- S22.
-
- The RSGB invites all radio amateurs to attend a Regional Meeting to be
- held next Sunday, the 5th of June, at the Forte Crest Hotel, near
- Brighouse, West Yorkshire. Turn off the M62 motorway at junction 25 and
- go towards Brighouse, the hotel is on the right a short distance from
- the junction. Coffee will be served prior to the meeting which is
- scheduled to start at 12.15pm. These meetings are for members and
- non-members of the Society to meet Council Members, Society Officers and
- staff to discuss the workings of the Society and amateur radio related
- matters. For further details, contact RSGB Zonal Council Member Peter
- Sheppard, G4EJP, on 0964 550397.
-
- We have been advised that there are two places still available on the
- coach trip to Friedrichshafen for the Hamvention in June. The coach
- leaves Nottingham on the 22nd of June returning to the UK on the 27th of
- June. The trip includes three nights in Lindau. More information can be
- obtained from Julian Mayfield, G0LXX on 0602 211069.
-
- During May, the number of Instructors registered with the RSGB in the
- Novice Licence Training scheme topped the one thousand mark. This is
- excellent news and is an indication that amateurs are prepared to pass
- on some of their expertise and enthusiasm in training new-comers to the
- hobby. They are to be congratulated for the work they do in training
- these new radio amateurs. Many instructors have said that their reward
- is hearing their students using their new call signs and obviously
- enjoying every minute of their new found hobby.
-
- The RSGB's Electromagnetic Compatibility Committee, or EMC, is trying to
- increase its network of coordinators, who deal with members EMC problems
- by telephone. Society members who feel they have the relevant background
- and would like to apply, should write to the Committee Chairman Robin
- Page-Jones, G3JWI. His address is correct in the RSGB Call Book. Areas
- in which additional EMC coordinator coverage is required, is in the
- Birmingham area, Northampton, Swindon, Cardiff, Ipswich, Carlisle and
- Sheffield.
-
- The Annual AMSAT-UK Colloquium takes place from the 28th to the 31st of
- July. There are still some places available. Full details and a booking
- form can be obtained by writing to AMSAT-UK, 94 Herongate Road, London
- E12 5EQ. Completed forms should be returned to AMSAT-UK, by the 15th of
- July. AMSAT-UK has recently donated sixty-eight-and-a-half thousand
- pounds to the Phase 3D Fund. This will be used to purchase a high
- capacity battery which should have a life span of between 10 and 12
- years. The Phase 3D satellite is due to be launched in July 1996.
-
- The Japan Amateur Radio League has advised us that permission has now
- been granted for Japanese radio amateurs to increase their use of the
- 3.5MHz band. The extra segment allocated is between 3.747 and 3.754Mhz.
-
-
- Now some items of HF DX news from the weekly RSGB DX News Sheet which is
- edited by Brendan McCartney, G4DYO.

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I visited a small museum in a coastat town recently. It had many interesting
- exhibits, amongst which was a radar unit (from a ship I assume). It was a
- stand-alone unit with a circular CRT screen approx. 18 inches in diameter.
-
- I managed to work out what most of the controls did except one marked
- 'defruiter'. Does anybody know what this control does?? I'd love to
- know (so would my colleagues). Unfortunately there were no explanatory
- labels on the unit saying where or when it was used. The 'defruiter'
- control was a knob - though could have been a rotary switch.
-
- Any info. gratefully received.

-
- And now the solar factual data:
-
- The period from the 16th to the 22nd of May has seen solar activity
- remain at very low levels; no flares were reported and no M or X flares
- have been reported since last February. Sunspot indices have remained
- low and meaned at about 45. With the more active side of the sun coming
- into view, solar flux levels started to climb and reached 95 units by
- the 17th, the highest levels since March 5th, but declined slightly by
- the 22nd giving an average for the period of 90 units. The 90 day flux
- mean was 86 units on the 22nd.
-
- The geomagnetic Ap indices declined from sub storm levels of 34 units on
- the 16th, down to quiet levels of 7 units by the 21st. Coronal holes are
- still troublesome but their intensity seems to be dying down. The
- electron Fluence levels are still very high due to the outbursts from
- the coronal holes, and stable ionospheric conditions will not return
- until these levels fall to nearer normal. The state has been 'Nil
- nothing to report' all the period. The aa indices as supplied by the
- British Geological Survey for the period 10th to 16th May was generally
- quiet, with the daily index for the week averaging 38.8 nanoTeslas about
- K3; the 13th was very quiet being only 11.7 nanoTeslas. The X-Ray flux
- levels have recovered and averaged A6.8 units; this was undoubtedly
- responsible for the increased solar flux levels. The monthly Ap indices
- for April was 26 units and the smoothed level for October 93 was 15.6
- units.
-
- I'll repeat the figures. Spots - 45; Flux - 90; Ap index - 13.4; X-ray
- flux - A6.8 April Ap 26 units.
-
- Now the ionospheric data for Central France:
-
- The F2 day-time critical frequencies at Poitiers as reported by Meudon
- are now being affected by the seasonal changes, so the daily highs are
- continuing to decline and averaged 7.0MHz. These levels are being
- reached around 19.00 hours. The darkness hour lows increase with the
- seasonal changes and averaged 3.6MHz, though there have been periods of
- spread F and Blanketing sporadic E. The lows are now centred about 04.00
- hours.
-
- I'll repeat the figures. Highs - 7.0MHz; lows - 3.6MHz.
-
- Now the ionospheric data for the north:
-
- The F2 day-time critical frequencies at Ekaterinberg averaged 5.6MHz and
- the darkness hour lows 3.1MHz
-
- I'll repeat the figures: Highs - 5.6MHz; lows - 3.1MHz.
-
- And lastly the solar forecast:
-
- This week the more active side of the sun will be rotating away; solar
- flux levels are expected to be about the 75s, with the geomagnetic
- levels up to sub storm about an Ap of 35 units, declining slightly as
- the week goes by. F-layer day-time ionospheric MUFs in the south are
- expected to be about 21MHz, though sporadic E could give openings at
- times up to the 50MHz band. The darkness hours are expected to reach
- 14MHz. The northern stations could be affected by the expected high
- geomagnetic activity so levels could be well down for them. North/south
- paths will be generally the best.
-
- And that's the end of the solar information.
-
-
- Finally in the main news, SSL has informed the Society that as of last
- Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns issued were in the G0 Uniform
- Whiskey and G7 Sierra Juliet series, and Novice calls in the 2 0 Alpha
- India and 2 1 Delta Charlie series. .
